It senses your hot water heater’s temperature and pressure. If the pressure on your hot water heater goes above 150 psi, this valve is made to open. If the temperature goes to high, it will open, protecting your hot water heater from over pressurizing and exploding. On electric hot water heaters, you have thermostats that regulate the temperature of your hot water heater.
